COMBINED MEETINGS: PLEASE READ THE WHOLE PAGE
AFM Summer School 2006
McGill University, Ernest Rutherford Physics Building, May 1-2, 2006
This meeting is co-sponsored by the RQMP, the CIHR Neurophysics Training Network,
SFR-VEECO, and Asylum Research.
The AFM Summer School offers an introduction to Scanning Force Microscopy for beginning graduate students. Lectures in the morning are complemented by hands-on experiments in the afternoon. There will be about 24 places for students doing hands-on experiments. These places will be given preferentially to students working in groups being part of the RQMP or the CIHR Neurophysics Training Network. The lectures are opened to everyone, participating in the hands-on experiments or not. The registration for the AFM Summer School is free, but registration is required to attend.
Students are encouraged to attend the following NanoForce Canada 2006 workshop, and present their project as poster contributions.

NanoForce Canada 2006
McGill University, Ernest Rutherford Physics Building, May 3-4, 2006
This meeting is co-sponsored by the RQMP, the CIHR Neurophysics Training Network,
SFR-VEECO, and Asylum Research.
The topics of the workshop will include studies of adhesion forces, unfolding forces for macromolecules, nano-indentation experiments, or atomic friction experiments, typically employing optical tweezers and atomic force microscopy, or studied theoretically. Studies addressing a micrometer scale and atomic force microscopy for imaging are not to be the focus of this workshop.
The format is a two-day workshop, where invited speakers will present and discuss their work at a level that is accessible for the participants of the preceding AFM summer school. Furthermore, participants are encouraged to present their projects in a poster session. Panel discussions will address topics of common interest, such as "Best practice in calibration", "Noise as source of pain and enlightenment", or "Sample preparation: who makes the flattest gold?"
List of speakers:
Evan Evans, University of British Columbia
Micheal Grandbois, Université de Sherbrooke
Peter Hoffmann, Wayne State University
Hongbin Li, University of British Columbia
Hung-Wen Li, McGill University
Martin Mueser, University of Western Ontario
