Faculties Details: Peter Grütter, PhD
Peter Grütter earned his PhD from the University of Basel, Switzerland, in 1989. He was then a post-doctoral fellow at the IBM Almaden Research Center and the IBM Zürich Research Laboratories in Switzerland. His research interests lie in scanning probe microscopy and the interdisciplinary applications of this technique to the emerging field of nanotechnology. In the next few years, his group plans to apply the recently developed tools, techniques and materials to the emerging new field of Nanoelectronics. Dr. Grütter has set a goal to provide experimental data that will allow the stringent testing of modeling. This will ultimately lead to the engineering rules of thumb necessary to design 1015 switches in a nanoelectronics implementation of an information processing device. On a shorter time scale a better understanding will provide guidance in the search for optimal nanoelectronics components. Dr. Grütter is a recipient of the William Dawson Scholar , NSERC Staecie Prize 2001 and the CIAR Young Explorer Prize 2002 ('Top 20 under 40'). He is also a member of MIAM (the McGill Institute of Advanced Materials), RQMP, (le Regroupement Québécois sur les Matériaux de Pointe), an Associate Member of the Chemistry Department at McGill University and an Associate Member of CRCN (Centre de Recherche sur le Cerveau, le Comportement et la Neuropsychiatrie) at Laval University in Québec City. |
