Research:
Gabrielle Thériault is developing a two-photon microscope with an extended depth of field. This system will enable users to image fluorescence in thick samples with fewer scans than with standard two-photon microscopy. The approach consists in shaping the laser beam into a needle of light instead of a spot, so that the resolution of the system is constant over a large depth (up to 200 microns). Hence it becomes possible to rapidly image populations of neurons that are spread out in a thick sample.
